Diversity and Inclusion
"Inclusive Thinking = Stronger Teams"
Welcome back to another edition of Next-Level Skills. Each edition, we explore the human and leadership capabilities that help us navigate work and life more effectively. Skills that move beyond theory and into practical application.
A warm welcome to everyone who has joined our community since the last edition. Whether you've been with us since the beginning or have recently discovered the newsletter or the book, thank you for being part of this journey.
Today’s topic is both powerful and deeply personal: Diversity and Inclusion.
It’s not just a policy or checkbox. It’s a mindset, one that shapes how we listen, decide, lead, and create together.
When Different Perspectives Met a Common Goal
A few years ago, I led a project team with members from five different cultural backgrounds. At first, collaboration was tricky. Communication styles varied, ideas clashed, and even the way we handled conflict felt worlds apart. But something shifted when one team member suggested a “Culture Swap Lunch.”
Each of us shared food, stories, and a small insight about our traditions. What started as a light-hearted activity turned into a turning point. Walls came down, curiosity went up, and suddenly, the ideas flowing in the room had more colour, empathy, and innovation.
That experience taught me that
Without connection, diversity becomes surface-level. With it, we unlock the full potential of every voice.
Why Diversity and Inclusion Matter More Than Ever
In a world connected by technology yet divided by misunderstanding, diverse teams are not a luxury - they’re a strategic advantage.
Research from McKinsey (2023) found that companies with greater diversity in leadership are 39% more likely to outperform peers in profitability. But beyond numbers, inclusion drives engagement, belonging, and creativity.
When everyone feels safe to speak up, we don’t just get more ideas - we get better ones!
And when those ideas are heard and respected, collaboration becomes more meaningful and outcomes more impactful.
Diversity is being invited to the party; inclusion is being asked to dance.
— Verna Myers
It’s the invitation that turns potential into progress.
The Essence of Inclusion: From Policy to Practice
Policies set the framework, but culture sets the tone. Inclusion happens not in statements, but in the smallest everyday actions : how we listen, credit others, and handle differences.
To build inclusive habits, we need to move from awareness to action. That starts with empathy - the ability to step into someone else’s experience and ask,
“What might I not be seeing here?”
Creating space for diverse voices isn’t about lowering standards. It’s about broadening perspectives. True inclusion strengthens decision-making, not dilutes it.

Practice Active Inclusion
Pro Tip #1: Invite quieter voices into conversations. Ask open-ended questions that encourage contribution.
When we signal that every perspective matters, engagement follows naturally.
Challenge Hidden Bias
Pro Tip #2: Bias thrives in silence. Be conscious of who we default to in discussions or whose ideas get the spotlight.
A moment of awareness can prevent patterns of exclusion.
Lead with Cultural Curiosity
Pro Tip #3: Make an effort to learn about others’ backgrounds, communication styles, and work values.
Curiosity builds bridges where assumptions build walls.
Acknowledge and Celebrate Differences
Pro Tip #4: Mark cultural events, celebrate milestones, and show interest in colleagues’ traditions.
Recognition fosters belonging far more than formal training alone.
Create Psychological Safety
Pro Tip #5: Inclusion can’t exist without trust. Model openness, admit mistakes, and make it safe for others to do the same.
People contribute their best ideas when they feel secure.

Some Final Thoughts...
The strength of a team doesn’t come from how alike we are, but how we value what makes us different. When we approach diversity with openness and inclusion with intent, we create environments where everyone can thrive.
In diversity there is beauty and there is strength.
— Maya Angelou
Let’s continue building workplaces that reflect both.
Now, over to us, how can we make our teams more inclusive, more curious, and more connected this week?
